Editor's Verdict:

Canflix is a relatively new contender in the online DVD rental arena, and although they are not yet as big as Zip they are certainly getting there. It's not hard to see why, because Canflix has a lot to offer both casual renters and real DVD nuts. The website itself is simple, uncluttered and easy to navigate. The reviews and list-management systems are well thought out and better than most at telling you whether a film you're thinking of listing is currently available, out of stock or on order. They are also quick at ordering in titles members request that aren't already in stock. Customer support is generally rated as good, even though there is no phone line, only email and postal addresses.

One of Canflix's best selling points is the value for money on offer. This is as at least as good as, and sometimes better than, that offered by our number one choice, depending on which package you choose. A minor criticism is that unlike many of our top 10 there are no light-use options available, for example one or two DVDs at a time, though arguably this would not be enough to satisfy most appetites. A plus factor is that you can pause your account while on vacation so as not to pay for movies you can't watch, making Canflix even better value for money.

The range and number of DVDs Canflix offers is very good. It's not quite as broad as what a media giant like Zip can offer, but it's safe to say anything you're likely to want can be found in their inventory (unless your tastes are really out there). The only real problem is that a medium-sized operator like Canflix generally isn't able to buy in as many copies of hot new titles as their larger rivals, meaning you may have to wait longer to see them. A major plus for gamers is that Canflix not only rent out console games, but do so at the same rates as they charge for DVDs, so that's doubly unusual. If games are your thing, Canflix has to be your rental provider of choice.

The basic service works pretty much like many of the other DVD rental sites listed in this category. You create a list of DVDs you want ranking them in order of priority. However many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are then sent to you by mail. When you're done watching them you just pop them in the pre-paid return mailer. Upon receipt, Canflix will mail you the next batch of DVDs from your list.. Delivery takes 2-5 days, depending on how close you live to their depots in Calgary and Ontario. Luckily, you can reduce waiting times by letting Canflix know when you've put a DVD in the mail to them so they can send out the next batch within 24 hours without waiting for returning DVDs to get back.

All in all, Canflix is a strong contender for the crown of best DVD rental website in Canada. If given a boost to the number of DVDs stocked, and an extra shipping depot or two (to cut down on delivery times), in a year or two, Canflix could well be leading the pack.
