Editor's Verdict:

Part of the appeal of Cinemail is that it grew out of a sucessful movie rental store in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where the company is still based, and thus brings 20 years of experience, expertise and professionalism to your online DVD rental experience. Though it has expanded a great deal in recent years, Cinemail is by no means a huge, impersonal multinational operation and retains much of the charm of a small company that prides itself on good service, as evidenced by their loyal, growing membership. Rather than having to deal with an automated queue-based system, if you have a query you can phone them and talk to a human being who'll more than likely be able to sort out your enquiry there and then. Unlike some companies, Cinemail don't sacrifice individual customer care in a quest to become the biggest rental provider in the country, they'd much rather be the best.

The website itself is simple and easy to use, lacking the clutter, bells and whistles found on a lot of other DVD rental sites and focusing on making DVD rental easy, affordable and fun. Movies are categorised in a very thorough and comprehensive range of genres to make it simple to find stuff you'll enjoy. Our only criticism of the website, assuming you don't miss the whistles and bells, is that you have to log in in order to read the reviews and get a feel for how useful they are, surely something you should be able to do before you sign up?

Having said that, the selection of titles is fairly huge, not as large as some of the monsters of the DVD rental market, but focusing on offering pretty much any DVD you could actually want to watch as opposed to absolutely any DVD in existence. The inventory includes all genres of modern western cinema as well as the whole spectrum of Asian, Indian and Oceanic filmmaking, all available in a wide variety of languages. There's even the "Criterion" selection, dedicated to movies that were important in the history of filmmaking, so there's no excuse for not knowing your "Citizen Kane" from "Who Stole the President's Brain?". As well as movies there is a generous selection of television series, which Cinemail will make sure to send you in the correct order to avoid confusion or plot spoilerage.

If Cinemail don't currently stock a DVD you're after you can even request them to find it and they will do their best to track down a copy for you. Members can also buy DVDs, at a 10% discount, via Cinemail's sister site, www.movievilage.ca. The only drawback is that, as a smaller operation, Cinemail may not be able to stock as many copies of popular titles as larger companies, meaning that if you put a hot new release on your request list it may take a little longer to get to you than most other titles. In our view, though, this is outweighed by the superior customer service you get with Cinemail.

Cinemail offer a wide selection of monthly subscription plans (with no joining fee), offering something to suit every appetite and lifestyle. 3 of these offer unlimited DVDs, the only restriction being how many you can have out at a time and how fast you're physically able to watch and return them, the other 3 have a monthly limit to the number of DVDs you can rent, with the bonus that if you don't use up your allotted number of rentals each month what's left is carried over the the next one, something not all services do. All the options offer highly competitive value for money compared to other market leaders. You can even pause your account while you're on vacation to avoid paying for movies you can't watch.

The basic service works pretty much like many of the other DVD rental sites listed in this category. You create a list of DVDs you want, ranking them in order of priority. However many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are then sent to you by mail. When you're done watching them you just pop them in the pre-paid return mailer. Upon receipt, Cinemail will mail you the next batch of DVDs from your list unless your subscription has a monthly limit to the number of DVDs you can rent and you've just reached it. Delivery is pretty fast, around 2-5 days depending on how close you live to their depot in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This delay is not as much of a pain as you might think because Cinemail offer a clever "quick returns" service whereby you can notify them when you mail a batch of DVDs back to their depot via the website and they send the next DVDs out to you the following day rather than wait for the returning batch to arrive. Note, though, that this service only becomes active once you have returned 3 rentals to them.

All these reasons, coupled with the personal touch you get from using a smaller company rather than a vast, impersonal DVD behemoth, mean Cinemail.ca is right up there with the top online rental services in the country.
