Editor's Verdict:

The unimaginatively named DVDFlix website is certainly nothing special to look at, and the combination of red and beige on white somehow manages to be both bland and visually abrasive, but it's easy enough to use, if a bit cluttered and unhelpful for first timer visitors. Instead of simple links to FAQs and details of membership options there are endless lists of new and upcoming DVDs and only scanty information about how the service actual works. When you do find this information it is straightforward enough, although for some reason it seems to guide you towards choosing the cheapest option and then upgrading later rather than telling you about all your choices up front, which is weird. The value these packages offer is, it has to be said, fairly competitive.

The database is easily searchable and grouped into handy genres, with recommendations and short but informative reviews. A plus is that DVDFlix is better than most companies at telling you what extras are included on the DVDs, although user reviews and a sort of rating system are sadly missing. The choice of films is pretty good and the selection of TV box sets(rented one disc at a time) generally not bad, if lacking in some key areas. Their scope is probably adequate for the casual movie watcher but stronger on mainstream and popular releases then older or more obscure titles.

There is a contact email address but no phone number and there have occasionally been complaints about how long it takes to get a response and how difficult it can be to cancel after a free trial before they start billing you (at which point getting a refund becomes even more of an ordeal).

As with most other DVD rental sites listed in this category, the system works by asking you to create a list of DVDs you want to watch, ranking them in order of priority. However many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are then sent to you by mail. When you're done watching them you just pop them in the pre-paid return mailer. Upon receipt, DVDFlix will mail you the next batch of DVDs from your list, usually the same day. Delivery takes 1-4 days, depending on whether you live near a major city or in a remote, rural area.

All in all, DVDFlix offers pretty good value and a fair choice of DVDs. Not outstanding, but probably capable of satisfying the needs of casual DVD renters.
