Editor's Verdict:

As one of the Pioneers of DVD rental in Canada back in 2000, DVDHype offer years of experience in the business, as embodied in what they call their "QProgramme". This system basically means that how many DVDs you can have at a time is determined by where you live. Which is different. The idea is not particularly well explained in the FAQs, but presumably the idea is that people living far from Montreal who have to wait longer for their discs get as good value for money as those who live near their despatch depot and get them the next day. This makes some sense given the size and shape of Canada but leaves the problem that there is still only one package and therefore no choice of how many discs you can have unless you want to move to another part of the country, which seems a little inflexible. Still, it's been around for a while so presumably the system works well enough for members.

The website is simple and easy to use with a decent search engine for finding films, which provides some details about each film as well as a short review. All of which is fine, in a no-frills sort of way. The choice of DVDs is pretty good, particularly for Canadian films, and includes a decent selection of TV Box sets (each disc counts as one rental).

The unique pricing systems makes it hard to compare the value offered by DVD Hype to that of other online rental operations, but on the whole it seems to offer reasonable bang for your buck. As with most other DVD rental sites listed in this category, the system works by asking you to create a list of DVDs you want to watch, ranking them in order of priority. However many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are then sent to you by mail. When you're done watching them you just pop them in the pre-paid return mailer. Upon receipt, DVD Hype will mail you the next batch of DVDs from your list, usually the same day. Delivery takes 1-5 days, depending on whether you live in a remote area.

If the "Q Programme" system appeals to you DVD Hype may be a reasonable choice of online rental service, though if you want a whizzier website with more features or prefer to be in control of how many DVDs you can rent at once you may prefer to go for our No 1. choice, Zip. And I still have no idea what the "Q" stands for.
