Editor's Verdict: Until recently Premieres.ca specialized solely in selling DVDs but since early 2007 they have begun branching out into the booming online rental market. The red background with tiny black or white writing colorscheme on their welcome page is a little lurid and not exactly eyeball-friendly, but don't be put off, as the rest of the site is rather less glary and, on the whole, the website is accessible and well designed. Their inventory is easily searchable via a helpful system of categories and subcategories. You can also search by titles, though not actor or director names, as with some of the slicker rental websites. Each film has a summary and usually a customer review as well; Premieres is also better than most online rental operations at telling you what bonus features each DVD includes (but note that bonus discs count as separate rentals). Although the number of titles Premieres offers is considerably less than some of the established giants of the industry, chances are that unless you're a real cult movie buff you'll find pretty much everything they could want to watch here. If you want to see a particular movie that is not in their stock already they will happily order it in, even if you are the only customer who's asked for it. There is about the right number of packages to choose from - some rental websites offer either too few plans to flexibly meet customer's needs or so many that potential members may be left bewildered and confused. Premieres offers a choice of five different plans each of which, it has to be said, presents terrific value, generally a dollar or two cheaper than the equivalents offered by most of the other rental providers in our top 10. Each plan comes with a 2 week free trial, and at any one time Premieres is usually running at least one other promotional offer too. Another plus is that, unlike some other providers, Premieres offers a customer service phone number as well as an email address in case you need to get in touch urgently. The basic service works pretty much like many of the other DVD rental sites listed in this category. You create a list of DVDs you want, ranking them in order of priority (their list-management system is fine, if a bit less flexible and intuitive than some other websites offer). However many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are then sent to you by mail. When you're done watching them you just pop them in the pre-paid return mailer. Upon receipt, Premieres will mail you the next batch of DVDs from your list, usually on the same day. Delivery takes 2-5 days, depending on how close you live to their depot in Ontario, although this can be sped up by telling Premiers when you have put your returning DVDs in the mail so they can send out the next batch without having to wait for your returns to arrive. All in all, Premieres offers a professional service and excellent value for money. The range of titles is not quite as wide as some of the big names in the DVD rental game can offer, nor is the website quite as swish or swanky, and mailing times will suffer if you live a long way from Ontario (compared to companies that operate more than one depot in different parts of the country). Even so, if speed is not your major concern and your taste in movies isn't too obscure, Premieres may well be a strong contender for your DVD rental dollar. >> Click here to Visit Premieres.ca or << Back to the rest of our Canadian DVD Rental Site Reviews
