Editor's Verdict: Having been around for 6 years now and built up a respectable following, Relay Rental stand out because they emphasise customer satisfaction and keeping members happy over simply keeping the DVDs coming as fast and as cheaply as possible. Customer service is reputedly very good and includes a phone line and postal contact address as well as an email address (they pledge to call you back within 48 hours). Their website is nicely designed and laid out and explains the service they offer very clearly. There is a very good search engine for finding films you want, although the selection on offer is adequate rather than outstanding. This ethos of being as considerate and helpful as possible towards members is carried through into several other unusual policies. For one thing, if the DVD you choose has a bonus disc, Relay Rentals not only send it to you but do so without counting this as an additional rental (which is subtracted from your weekly allowance). Additionally, instead of selling their ex-rental DVDs to members, albeit at discounted rates, they offer them to you for free as a sign of appreciation (each member is guaranteed at least 2 free DVDs per year). And if you're not happy you can cancel your membership and get the remainder of your subscription back. Whilst most services that promise unlimited monthly rentals are limited by the practicalities of how many DVDs can be exchanged across a country the size of Canada given that there's no mail at weekends, Relay Rental's pledge to send you new DVDs every week as long as you generally return their DVDs within a week of receiving them. As the name suggests, the aim is to keep the DVDs moving and thereby maximise the amount of movies you get to see. Having said that, you are quite at liberty to keep DVDs for longer periods if you like, in which case your next batch will be sent out to you when the current one is received back at their depot, much like any other online rental service. In order to really make the system work in your favour, though, you really have to keep to the weekly returns schedule, otherwise you might be better off, financially at least, with one of the more familiar monthly packages offered by most online rental companies. Similarly, although Relay Rental only offer two main choices of weekly package, if these do not suit your needs they are wiling to be flexible and work out a personalised package tailored to your appetites (though the signup page doesn't make it very clear how you can arrange this). The value for money on offer is difficult to compare with other rental websites because Relay Rental works on the basis of how many DVDs you are sent each week rather than how many you are allowed each month or at any one time. If you buy their argument about how unlimited monthly packages are in fact limited to a maximum of 7-9 DVDs per month, then it works out as very reasonable. There is no free trial, but Relay Rental's argument is that the money this saves them is then spent on maximising value for people who have already signed up rather than enticing in new customers at the expense of loyal members. The service is also very flexible. As well as working out a package to suit you Relay Rental also allow you to increase or decrease your weekly allowance at a moments notice and suspend your account entirely if you go on vacation. As with most other DVD rental sites listed in this category, the system works by asking you to create a list of DVDs you want to watch, ranking them in order of priority. However many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are then sent to you by mail. When you're done watching them you just pop them in the pre-paid return mailer. Upon receipt, Relay Rental will mail you the next batch of DVDs from your list, usually the same day. Delivery takes 1-4 days, depending on how close you live to their depot in Ottawa. Note that the middling rating for value for money given above could be misleading given that Relay Rental can offer rather good value for money (and more DVDs per week) if you keep to their weekly returns schedule and they keep sending you new DVDs every week. Otherwise it comes out as quite steep. Really, its down to your own habits and preferences whether Relay Rental is the best DVD rental website for you or not.
