Editor's Verdict:

Rogers are already well known as the largest independent chain of DVD hire stores in Canada and have now moved into the online rental market too. This promises a professional, well organised service, as is reflected in a clearly laid out and easy-to-use website. Finding and choosing DVDs is easy as there are over 200 categories, which includes a huge range of movies and TV series, most of which have longish reviews.

This is not surprising given that Rogers Video Direct is in fact "Powered" by Zip, i.e. the internet side of their business is run by Zip.ca, our number one choice. This explains how their selection of DVDs can be so large: they share it with Canada's market leader, in fact everything about the online side of Rogers Video Direct is pretty much the same as with Zip. The value for money offered by their bewildering range of packages is, again, exactly the same as you get with Zip (i.e. pretty good). Really the only real reason for renting via Rogers Video Direct rather than actually direct through Zip would be if you wish to use your online membership in conjunction with one of their DVD rental stores, perhaps to increase your chances of finding a popular title or to redeem the in-store coupons some membership packages offer.

As with most other DVD rental sites listed in this category, the system works by asking you to create a list of DVDs you want to watch, ranking them in order of priority. However many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are then sent to you by mail. When you're done watching them you just pop them in the pre-paid return mailer. Upon receipt, Rogers Video Direct (okay, Zip) will mail you the next batch of DVDs from your list, usually the same day. Delivery takes 1-5 days, depending on how close you live to a major city.

Rogers Video Direct provide a perfectly decent service at perfectly decent prices, but unless you have a store of theirs handy in your neighborhood, enabling you to enjoy the additional perks, you might just as well go directly through Zip, our number one choice, and cut out the middleman.
