Editor's Verdict:

The blue and gold colourscheme of the StarFlix website is simple and striking and the layout clear and helpful. All the information you need initially is easily available and the search engine you use to find the DVDs you want is adequate, though hardly inspired. Similarly, each film has a short review and space for member reviews, though this is usually empty. All the essentials of a DVD rental website are here but there are no frills: you can't put your account on hold whilst on vacation and there is no "quick returns" facility whereby you can let them know when a DVD is on its way back to them so they can send you new ones straight away. The selection of movies is pretty good, particularly when it comes to French language films, though the website's claim to "over 30,000" is a little hard to swallow, and the statement on the "About Us" page that "StarFlix is Canada's largest online DVD rental service" is highly dubious to say the least, whether they're referring to range of titles or actual number of members (Zip, anyone?).

On the plus side, unlike a lot of DVD rental companies there is a contact phone number for customer support as well as an email address. However, in the past they have been accused of being slow to respond to queries, and allegedly continuing to charge some ex-customers on the basis that they have not returned a DVD, which ex-customers insisted they had returned. How much of this is substantiated or whether it's still a problem is impossible to say, but the idea of a company continually charging ones credit card and being unable to do anything about is certainly alarming.

There is a decent choice of five membership plans, offering something there to suit most appetites. The value for money on offer is okay, though there are certainly cheaper services about so don't be afraid to shop around. As with most other DVD rental sites listed in this category, the system works by asking you to create a list of DVDs you want to watch, ranking them in order of priority. However many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are then sent to you by mail. When you're done watching them you just pop them in the pre-paid return mailer. Upon receipt, StarFlix will mail you the next batch of DVDs from your list, usually the same day. Delivery takes 1-5 days, depending on whether you live in a remote area.

On the face of it Starflix offer unexceptional value for money on an impressive range of titles, though doubts about their actual inventory size and frequent customer service quibbles make it difficult to imagine why you'd take a chance on this company when there are other rental providers out there with excellent reputations for customer service who offer superior value for money.
