Editor's Verdict:

Videomatica started out as a Vancouver video rental store in 1983 and have been among the first to pick up on each new step in the evolution of movie rental ever since, from moving into DVD rental, to having a virtual online store and offering online sales to boot. This long experience seems to have paid off in a good-word-of-mouth reputation which began in Vancouver and is now spreading nationally via their online rental operation. Videomatica also prides itself on its broad remit when it comes to stocking the most interesting and eclectic range of movies and TV shows, from favorite foreign foibles to massive multiplex megahits. The range is truly impressive - larger operations may claim to have thousands and thousands of titles but you'd be hard pressed to want anything that isn't here - and if you do they'll buy it in for you.

The website is well organised and easy to use; a clear and comprehensive FAQ explains how their system works and how to get the best of it. Choosing films for your queue is made very straightforward by a truly rigorous system of genre classifications, reviews and ratings. Unusually, however, Videomatica don't list their range of packages and promotional introductory offers on their main website, as there are over 25 of them. To prevent confusion, these don't appear until part-way through the sign-up process (which seems like an odd solution, albeit one genuinely geared towards helping you find the option best suited to your needs).

Additionally, each month, everyone who signs up is put into a prize draw to receive a month's free rental. You can also get a 25% reduction on your monthly rate by paying quarterly. It has to be said that their basic packages are not quite as cheap as you get with the more mainstream rental operations who lack an emphasis on alternative and international cinema, but this is the norm in the DVD rental market and if you can work the various options and promotional offers deftly enough you'll probably be able to make the numbers work in your favor anyway.

The basic service works pretty much like many of the other DVD rental sites listed in this category. You create a list of DVDs you want, ranking them in order of priority. However many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are then sent to you by mail. When you're done watching them you just pop them in the pre-paid return mailer. Upon receipt, Videomatica will mail you the next batch of DVDs from your list unless your subscription has a monthly limit to the number of DVDs you can rent and you've just reached it. Delivery takes 2-5 days, depending on how close you live to their depot in Vancouver. However, there is a unique twist to this - to make up for the increased delivery time to the more distant provinces, Videomatica throw in an extra DVD for free in addition to what your package allows

Packages and queuing options are extremely flexible compared to many other online rental operations. For example, Videomatica allow you to jump the long queue to be first to enjoy popular new releases for a small extra fee. In this way you can choose a package with a lower monthly rental limit and, with judicious use of the queue-jumping option, get just the films you really want really fast for about the same price as you'd pay for a higher-end package. This offers you a degree of choice over how much control you exercise over your rentals which few competitors can provide. You can even put your account on hold if you are away on vacation and un able to watch any DVDs - this amount of time will then be added on to the end of your subscription period.

All-in-all, Videomatica offer a decent DVD rental service and are surely a top choice for those who are interested in expanding their cinematic tastes. However, if you just want to keep the latest studio blockbusters coming cheap and fast to your mailbox then our top ranking sites can probably do it cheaper and faster, albeit without the satisfaction of supporting a smaller company motivated as much by a love of film as by the profit motive.
