Editor's Verdict:

Zip.ca is simply Canada's largest, most popular, fastest growing provider of fast, convenient and, best of all, breathtakingly affordable all-you-can-eat DVD rental delivered right to your mailbox. You'd imagine there has to be a good reason for this and you'd be right. In fact, there are many.

For a start, the website is helpful and informative, the striking homepage offering a simple choice of links to take you where you want to go rather than crammed with menus, submenus and numerous flashing advert banners. If you've never rented online before, even if you're still a bit intimidated by the whole interweb experience, you won't feel lost; Zip makes it easy to find your way around. The "About" pages explain how the service works simply, clearly and helpfully, and unlike many online rental providers there is a telephone helpline you can call with any queries rather than just an email address. Choosing what DVDs you want to watch is easy, partially because they are so thoroughly categorised (there are, in all, about 200 categories and subcategories to help you select) and reviewed, they even recommend DVDs you may like based on your existing tastes. Zip also makes it simple for you to manage your rental list, assigning and changing priorities as you wish.

Value for money is nigh-on unbeatable. Not only do they offer a 2-week free trial but, unlike a lot of other leading rental providers, its applicable to ALL of their packages rather than just one of the cheaper ones. Should you choose to unsubscribe, leaving is as quick and easy as joining, there is no fuss and no extra charge as long as you return any outstanding DVDs within a reasonable time (after all, nobody likes being caught in a zip). There is an option to suit every pocket and appetite so it's really worth thinking about how much you want to spend on DVDs every month and how many you're realistically likely to be able to watch before choosing.

The selection of DVDs on offer is simply outstanding, the largest in the country by some way. Not only that, Zip stock more copies of popular titles than other operations so you don't have to wait as long to wrap your eyeballs around the hottest new releases. Zip also leads the country in terms of offering a good range of Blu-ray titles, the total currently being around 700, but this figure is constantly rising and will probably already be out of date by the time you read this. In the unlikely event that Zip do not already stock a DVD that you want they will hunt a copy down for you, even if you're the only member who has requested it. Not only are there all the movies you could ever want, but also a huge selection of television series too. This means you never again have to depend on the TV networks' fickle scheduling to catch that all-important final, nerve-grinding, hour of "24" or to discover one of those word-of-mouth hidden gems that never seem to get shown, like Buffy creator, Joss Wheden's, "Firefly".

The basic service works pretty much like many of the other DVD rental sites listed in this category. You create a list of DVDs you want (your "ziplist"), ranking them in order of priority. However many DVDs your package allows you to have at once are then sent to you by mail. When you're done watching them you just pop them in the pre-paid return mailer. Upon receipt, Zip will mail you the next batch of DVDs from your list unless your subscription has a monthly limit to the number of DVDs you can rent and you've just reached it. Delivery takes 2-4 days, depending on how close you live to their depots in Ottawa, Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver (this is usually quicker than most companies, who tend to have one depot serving the whole country). You can even let Zip know when you've put a DVD in the mail to them so they can send out the next within 24 hours without waiting for returning batch to reach them.

In our view, Zip represents the best way to enjoy unlimited monthly DVD rental without hardly having to leave the house, and here's why:

  • Excellent Value for money
  • Largest Selection of Titles
  • Market leader in stocking Blu-ray titles
  • Favored by more Canadians over any other rental service.
  • Good range of member-friendly features
  • Website is secure, easy to use and makes choosing films simple and fun

These reasons explain why Zip.ca is Canada's market leader and our No. 1 choice. Zip offer everything you could ask for from an online DVD rental website and its every bit as fast and simple as the name suggests.
